This is probably the worst "luxury" building you could live in. Please look elsewhere! The biggest complaint (among many others) is that the elevators never, ever work and for a residence with 700+ people living paying top price that is unacceptable. Management could care less - every one of our neighbors consistently talk about how they will be leaving the building as soon as their lease is up. This is a sentiment with almost everyone in the building. One of the resident elevators is locked and used for construction (which I am pretty sure is illegal), one is constantly broken leaving one elevator working. You will wait in line with 20 other people for about 10 minutes waiting for the elevator...multiply that by two times to go down and then back up and you have a total of about 20 minutes if you just want to go down to the lobby to grab a delivery. Not to mention people pack in the elevators during a time where COVID-19 is extremely prevalent. Incredibly unsafe and a number of us residence have considered a class action suit against the building. Stay away at all costs!!
Love living here! Building is clean, staff is nice and helpful and the gym is awesome. My apt has the best view of the city and water and really feels like home. The is perfect if your an active person. I love that the park is so close so I can head out for a run or bike ride. I definitely recommend living here.
While the building does have an outdated lobby, the apartments are well equipped. The service though is excellent, from the management office to the maintenance team I have had nothing but great experiences dealing with the staff at 101 West End
My husband and I lived here for three years, in three different apartments as our needs changed over time. The staff was fantastic including all the concierge, doormen, maintenance team and office staff. We rarely experienced maintenance issues, and when we did (just typical NYC apartment stuff nothing crazy) they were handled quickly and expertly by the maintenance team. All three of our apartments were in the East tower and we rarely noticed any elevator issues (as a previous review had mentioned). There are three elevators per tower so even if one was down we barely noticed a difference, and all three were almost always functioning. There is of course elevator traffic during rush hour but that's to be expected in any NYC high rise, especially if you're waiting in the morning on a lower floor and the elevators fill up on higher floors. (This is the reality of living in a large apartment building!) We were very sad to leave our home at 101. We surely would have stayed if we had not decided to move out of the country!
Great place to live, close to everything you need and super friendly staff! I have no idea what the Ping K character below is referring to, I drink from the faucet, any repair was completely the next day and my electric bill has been no more than $50 per month (in a one bedroom apt).
We've enjoyed living at 101 West End Ave for nearly five years. While we always loved our apartment, which is much more spacious than similar one bedroom apartments in our neighborhood at the same or greater price point, recently it's gotten even better. The management team has made beautiful changes in the lobby and the community lounge and they are super responsive to requests. The staff - from concierges to door folks to the maintenance crew - work really hard and are always pleasant. There's a small and pretty park across the street, it's a few blocks to Riverside Park, a few blocks to Central Park, and a two block walk to our favorite place, Lincoln Center. Management also provides opportunities for us to "give back" through clothing, food, and toy drives. Really, we couldn't ask for a better place to live in the heart of Manhattan.
Don't be fooled by the friendly staff and the beautiful lobby - this building is literally falling apart. Floors are crooked, brown water comes out of the faucets every month, leaky windows. Your electricity bill will be sky-high due to the lack of insulation and general draftiness. You are much better off renting from a condo owner in one of the newer buildings in the area- it won't be much more expensive than 101 WEA, and your electricity bills will be much lower.
I have lived here from the beginning of this building in 2000 and find it a beautiful place to live. The area has been developed since the inception but it is a beauty to look at. The staff who care this building are wonderful people. I would highly recommend this place.
Really great move in experience - Gina and Laura from the leasing team were wonderful to work with, very responsive to our flurry of emails and questions, and helped to make sure that our transition to our new home was as smooth as possible. As for the building itself, it is beautiful!! Very well maintained, large open spaces, beautiful gym and lounge, really friendly doormen and staff - 101 West End is a wonderful place to come home to!
I've lived at 101 West End for over two years now and would've totally appreciated a review before moving into the building. Here's the deal...Doormen, porters and front desk staff are superb. Honestly, some of the best in the residential service industry. The building is clean, well kept and amenities are great.
Cons:
The problem is the East Tower. If you have a choice, go with the west tower. The East Tower has constant elevator issues. Just know, you're going to deal with an elevator down about every other week. The other issue that compounds the problem even more is the East Tower has the only access to the gym, laundry and club room which causes even more foot traffic. Not sure why the bldg was designed that way. Anyway, if you can live with waiting 15 mins for an elevator then ignore my comments. Keep in mind, the leasing/ management office on site is very complicit with the issue and will only say "sorry and we understand". I've chosen to not renew my lease due the elevator problem. It's quality of life, living on a high floor and you're paying a premium rent.Hope this helps!
Great place to come home! Excellent concierge staff, they are friendly and are always happy to see you, I have gotten to know them through the years, and it has been a joy. The management is always looking for ways to build a community. The service is excellent, and they go above and beyond to make sure things are in good condition in your apartment. Great location and neighbors.
Not impressed. Overall 2/5 rating.Pros:We've lived here a year and love the unit and layout. It's quiet with a lot of morning sunlight. There's a corner floor to ceiling window in the living room, which is great. The gym is nice - nothing spectacular, but definitely better than others we've seen.Timely responses to maintenance requests. The maintenance staff and door/front desk employees are really nice, too (although we had one bad experience with a maintenance employee, it's normally really good).
Cons:
Cons:No meaningful amenities. The gym is nice, but aside from that, there is only one laundry room for the entire tower (located on the 4th floor) and a couple of small lounge areas. Typically there's a guy in the nicer lounger blaring the TV on a daily basis, so it's really not functional for anyone else during the afternoon most days. We've been looking at other buildings now that our lease is about to expire and have found some amazing options nearby for the same or cheaper rate for literally a 10x-20x increase in value. 21 West End was willing to offer 3.5 months free with half price amenities the first year. The place is phenomenal - it's essentially at the same level as a 5-star hotel. We definitely recommend looking there before considering 101 West End if you want this neighborhood. Personally, we chose River Place at 42nd between 11th and 12th as our next home. It's rent stabilized, so the increases in rent year over year are very limited and the rent rates are extremely good compared to buildings which aren't rent stabilized. The leasing agent has also been incredibly helpful, patient, and kind. She replies within 12-24 hours to every email - most of the time within minutes, even after hours. To me, it says a lot about a place when the employees are happy, friendly, and willing to help regardless of "working hours". The amenities are also incredible (and reasonably priced at $115 for the two of us per month) and all the units are newly renovated. There are two rooftop terraces, an amazing gym with free workout classes (yoga, spin, etc), an indoor lap pool, sauna, fully equipped locker rooms, beautiful lounge area with chef's kitchen, pet friendly, rooftop tennis court, outdoor putting green, pool table, full-sized basketball court, free shuttle service during busy hours in the morning and evening to and from Times Square and even the East side (Lex Ave), as well as several shops and corner stores, restaurants, etc nearby. We also happened to visit at just the right time when a PH unit on the 41st floor was coming available for nearly the same rate as our 8th floor unit at 101 West End would renew for. Our current unit overlooks West End Ave and has quite a bit of street noise throughout the day and night - to the extent that I have to wear ear plugs to be able to sleep. The PH unit at River Place is also going to be newly renovated before we move in with brand new appliances, new kitchen appliances, cabinets, etc, as well as a newly renovated bathroom with beautiful fixtures and marble floor. The unit has a unique layout with high ceilings, beautiful city and water views and eastern exposure. In our current unit at 101 West End Ave, the windows don't even open and shut properly and every time we request something be done about it by the leasing office, we're ignored. Management also clearly doesn't care about tenants or turnover. Our renewal would have increased our rent from $3415 to $3585 (+$85/month for the gym per unit) and when we reached out to ask about lowering the increase, were ignored for two weeks. When they finally returned our call, the agent gave us a lot of sass and attitude like we were lucky to be living here. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place. There are so many better, newer options nearby that are much better values to consider.
The staff and quality of living at 101 West End Avenue is beyond phenomenal! It makes your living experience super easy, as they accommodate any and every need. From maintenance, to an on site dry cleaner, and amazing gym! The staff goes over and beyond to make you feel like you're no longer in another New York Apartment. At 101 West End, you're Home :-).
We love our apartment here! The staff is friendly and helpful - the building is well maintained and the office or leasing staff is Terrific! Safe building and neighborhood - great location. We have a high floor apartment which provides for breathtaking views. The response to our service requests usually exceeds my expectations. We also have dogs and the building is great for dog owners!
We had to move out last year after rent increased19 percent in 3 years. Though leasing and management staff say things like, "we'll take care of you" and "we want you to be happy", they will not offer ANY reductions in lease terms. We also noticed that after we moved out, our apartment was advertised on their site for less than our new lease quoted- why couldn't they have offered that rate to us when we asked? Also be aware, they will threaten tenants that they will have to repaint their apartments when they leave if the apartment is not in rerentable shape as when you moved in. On top of that, we lived there 3 years and by city law, landlords are required to repaint before new tenants come in. They still told us we might have to paint the apartment WHY?. When we inquired about the painting issue, leasing staff referred us to maintenance staff and said that hopefully we would not be "penalized" at move-out for the condition of the apartment. Many negatives here. Be aware you are 2 long city blocks -like avenue blocks- from the subway- a long walk in winter and the rain. The gym is not included in the rent and there is no pool or roof deck for tenants to use. One elevator, normally for tenants, becomes the freight elevator for those moving in or out leaving only 2 elevators for current tenants. Due to the VERY high turn-over in this building the results are often long waits to access elevators to get up or down. Concierge staff and doormen are wonderful but management and leasing staff are only concerned with the rental dollars- impersonal, uncaring and looking for the highest rent they can get. There is no loyalty to good tenants who always pay their rent on time and bring stability and maturity to the building- it is really a shame.
Great place to live. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Building is well maintained. Rent is reasonable for the market. Neighborhood is amazing. Great for pet owners. Very happy with my experience here. Planning to stay indefinitely!
The building is great BUT be very careful because they have been increasing the rent by 10% each year, which becomes unsustainable and forces you to move out. The worse is that when you decide to move out they put your apartment back in the market for a price lower than your renewal price. For some reason they prefer to value non-residents more than current residents. It's a shame because the building and staff are great and I would mot have moved out if they had not forced me to. If you're looking to stay here long term, go find another building!
